View topic - steering column
Just saw some disturbing footage of a chineese built 4wd undergoing a full frontal impact crash test. The steering column pushed past front of crash test dummies face and cracked it on the back of the head on the way back down. OUCH
So im thinking MK1 escort with an 3/4 inch diameter solid steel steering column 'spear' that Im thinking should be converted to collapsible.
Has anyone had any experience with converting columns to collapsible or adapting one from another (presumably modern) car Im guessing clubman guys may have similar concerns and had experiences.
I fitted a Mk2 RS2000 wheel, which has a built in "crush" zone, and a Mk2 shaft into a Mk1 column. The two bolts holding the column assy to the dash are supposed to be shear bolts and snap off, but can't see that helping.
My tip is not to crash, secondly to that they are 30 year old cars. They probably reached and breached the regs back then but driving and old car is risky to some degree.
Still, wouldn't want to get hit with an airbag at 300km/h or whatever they accelerate at if you were picking ya' nose!
Craig,
Mines a race car so the risk of 'an incident' may be a little higher, concrete walls and other competitors sideweays in front of me and speed.
I have heard of healeys and sprites and clubmans having collapsible columns made but cant find anyone to do it in Australia. The US has a few companies so Im looking for options.
I think you are on the right track looking at what the clubman guys do. Alot of clubmans use the escort rack and Westfield use a Corolla column http://www.mywestfieldbuild.com/steering.htm may be worth looking at.
OZ, still havent done anything, wasnt going fast enough to warrant it, but the cossie may change that. Im thinking similar to the power steering conversion with a corsa that is popular here inthe uk, without the power steering, My thinking is another bend or two and rigid fixing between the firewall and dash and any deformation occurs within the engine bay.
Seems to me that there is an almost direct line from the joint on the steering rack right up to the drivers chest/face. As you say, put a bend somewhere to eliminate that direct line. I am still researching also but do not have anything firm...
I don't know if you can adapt this idea to an Escort, but I'm using an EF Falcon steering column in my '65 Mustang. It has is a plate fixed to the firewall with a bearing attached to it, on the engine bay side is a uni joint with a solid shaft to connect to another uni joint on the rack. The top of the column is fixed to the underside of the dash and there is a telescoping section between the dash attachment and the firewall. The top of the column is attached to the dash in such a way that it can beak away in the event of an impact.
Added benefit is that the EF colum is tilt and in/out adjustable.
I got the driver's side firewall cut from a car at the wreckers as I'm using the pedal box and brake booster as well. No idea how close a match it would be in the Escort. I don't have the Mustang here at the moment (no shed yet) so I can't check out any measurements and the pics I have of it are on another PC. Not minor surgery by any means.
I agree, dont worry about length, there is so much surgery required shortening the main column is easy. I think as described, either another column or a modified escort column fixed to the firewall with a bearing and a series of uni joints to connect. in an impact the sections between the steering rack and firewall will distort when the rack moves closer. the floor should then distort next, thrusting the column up towards the screen not drivers head as it pivots around the fixed pint near the dash. if the dash distorts because of the impact a column impact is the last of your worries Not too concerned with tilt and reach as Im th only driver and dont need the extra weight. Cheers,
Will keep investigating. Tilt and reach would be nice as my wife will also drice and is shorter than me. I know what is going to happen though......this will end up in the too hard basket
140 series volvos have a simple joint that is offset and slides, I'll see if I can get a diagram. Have seen the mod on a healey 3000, to stop the steering column becoming a spear. cheers ted
