Guys, I am looking at replacing the kent pulleys for the cosworth engine I have. I just received the following e-mail regarding the material choice of a prospective vendor for said pulleys
we do not use free cutting like most we use 6082 (h30) much harder so they will not ware like the rest!!!
for £18 extra I can get them hard anodized you can only get it in black or gray and takes a week?
Does this sound right, good or bad.
Cheers,
Justin P

6082 seems to be the latest pommy fad to manufacture every thing out of, instead of 6061.
Better material like 7075 or 2024 would be nice, but not essential if enough 6082 is used in the right places for structural integrity. Radii in all the machined corners is more important than material selection.
The key to surface wear is proper hard anodising, so spend the extra for that, or go mad and have keronite surface treatment done.

Thanks John and Danny.
I have done some other research to determine a definition of free cutting and it appears its a lower grade alloy, though equally applicable to steel etc that allows it to be cut easier...makes sense really.
The 6082 grade is a good medium hardness/strength alloy good for stressed parts and is readily welded as well as hardness treated.
The parts on offer do not appear to have the spindly design of the Kent cams cosworth pulleys, they are more akin to the Newman brand of pulleys in design and at half the price. (probably for a reason)
cheers
