RS Motorsport :: Classic Speed Restored

Hi all, just got back from shopping at the Sherrin motorsport shop in sunny brissie, and yes more money to spend

Picked up a Cobra race seat and Willans 6 point harness out of one of the celebrity BMW cars from this years F1 GP.

Now I don't have a cage and wondering how to mount the harness. Back parcel shelf doesn't look all that strong and not sure if CAMS regs allow it to be mounted there. Thinking of getting a steel bar made up mounting each side of the rear seat belt mounts.

Anyone got any thoughts or pics of how you may have got around my dilema?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Not sure on legalities here in QLD but I think harnesses are only to be fitted when you have at least a half cage.

As for mounting points, don't have the rear straps mounted down too low. I'm sure in the CAMS manual there is a max angle allowed from horizontal and it ain't that much. Reason is in the event of a crash, if the rear straps are mounted down low you get compression of the spine in the seat because it pulls down rather than back. You could end up in a lot worse condition than just a regular lap-sash belt.

Rear parcel tray is not a bad place. You can use the holes intended for baby seats, after all their specifically there as anchor points.

Also for the seat, make sure it's mounted securely. In the event of an accident, you & the seat should remain as one and stay exactly where Mr Ford intended. Trust me on that one

Don't do it without a cage.
Any CAMS approved cage should have attachments for the harness just behind the seat.
If you run the harness to the rear shelf, you may still hit your head on the windscreen in a accident.

gotta watch those baby seat mounts as well, unless you plan to lose some weight, they might not be rated to a full adults weight, svelte as you might be

get a harness bar built into it when you get one.
