The type 9 is the same length as the 4 speed. Articles written about needing to shorten the tail shaft are referring to the pommy version because their gearbox was shorter. We got the bigger gearbox as standard.
I've done 2 conversions and never shortened the tail shaft and never had any problem with the length of the tail shaft.

2 liter escort 4 speed OZ box
Note the gear stick is further forward on ESCORT box as opposed to Cortina 2 lire box
