Need advice!!!

Hey all. My name is Adrian and I am considering doing a bit of work to my mk2 escort. I've talked to a few mates and what I've been told so far is to get a twin weber 40ml sidedraught carby setup, a salisbury 8" lsd, a tailshaft to suit and a sierra 5 speed gearbox. It would be most appreciated if anybody has any feedback or advice they can give me. i.e different parts or where to get the parts from. As far as I'm aware at the moment the diff is the only thing that will most likely have to be ordered from overseas. I don't want to spend an absolute fortune. My main goal is squeezing a bit more juice out of the car and making it alot more enjoyable to drive on the whole.

To answer your question, we need a little more info.

What do you want to do with the car ie. daily driver, weekend cruiser, club car or all out racer?

Are you starting with a 2 litre or 1600?

What's your budget?

I'm starting with a 2 litre. My maximum budget is about $10000 and I'm probably more aiming to be quick off the mark so i'd say all out racer. :P

OK then....

Good rebuild on the 2L, cast pistons, ARP bolts, HV oil pump, big valve head, billet cam, vernier, better twin 45's than 40's, electronic ignition and extractors. Should make a reliable 150 flywheel hp without being a pig to drive.

Go the Sierra 5 speed - quick and easy.

Diffs - several options. Stay with the standard diff but get an LSD centre which should be fine with that hp, or you can go Hilux diff conversion. The caveat on using the standard diff is ensuring the rear suspension is also modified to stop the axle tramp.

Do the suspension, upgrade the brakes to vented discs at the front with Volvo 4 spots and make sure all rubbers etc are new.

You should just about do it on $10k assuming you don't have to do bodywork.

Make sure you post some pictures when you finish :wink:

I've already had the engine rebuilt. I've already done about 10000km on it. If I remember correctly it's been bored out about twenty thou and I've converted it to run on unleaded.

How much would a Sierra 5 speed set me back?It'll take me a little while to get all this done but i'll post some pics for sure when she's done. :) If anybody can tell me the best places to get these bits and pieces from that would be awesome. Thanks for all your speedy replies guys.

Sierra 5sp's are usually in the range $400-500.

Danny has them locally. Keep an eye on ebay or the Trading Post as gearboxes and other pieces pop up regularly.
