Ring Gear damage

Guys,

How often would you have to replace the flywheels ring gear. Ive been around cars my entire life and never needed to or heard of anyone doing so. The reason I ask is Im thinking of a new steel flywheel with integral ring gear. Much cheaper than a seperate ring gear flywheel. Im also assuming in the unlikely event of damaging one it could be machined off and replaced with a replacement.

any thoughts?

Justin if it's cheaper than a separate ring gear flywheel then it will be made from crap and wont last long enough as a decent one will be a fair bit dearer as I have one on mine which is made from 4340 and then has two rounds of heat treatment

JP,

Genuine minefield steel types, for flywheels etc.

I believe any steel will be better than cast steel.

The key is heat treatment of ring gear.

However, theres another anomaly. When u fit an ring gear, whats the first thing u do..............heat it up to expand it !

One thing was, I was having a fair bit of problems, finding a ring gear, to buy!

Have u tried titan, for a price. They make good quality flys. That one I showed u that don't fit was a titan.

A friend, bought this, and was pissed off with service of dealer, but is happy with item. He shows them as black, when selling them.

Seems to have changed his name, scince last I saw him.........wonder why

BUT still has his logo on sump I see.

Justin,

http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/ ... gth_st.htm

EN24 is roughly similar to 4130. EN8 is toward the mild steel end of the range.

Determine what type of clutch plate your using before choosing flywheel material.

Harder steel, especially when heat treated offer the clutch less grip, counterproductive when going to alternate clutches to avoid clutch slip.

Having done some more research Im looking at an 7.25 inch AP lug drive clutch with 1 or 2 cintered plates. Or a similar thing a bit cheaper from quartermaster. Obviously If I can get an acceptable flywheel, 50 pounds cheaper that would be a great saving, but if ther is any doubt Il just by the equivalent AP or similar flywheel. Any thoughts

Thanks guys
