I remember seeing a TX3 (not sure what model) kitted out with a lot of cool gear at AutoBarn a couple of years back. The full turbo kit. It may even have been a AWD? Pretty cool! I know its a rebadged Mazda but nevermind...
For sure looked a lot of fun. We never got the late model Escorts here in Australia so this is pretty cool.
And as Nev mentioned, its younger and the parts are more readily available....
Still dreaming about an LS swapped 180SX for the same reasons...
Hope you keep the forum going nev , I learnt so much off both this forum and classic-ford , but unfortunately I do not own anything ford escort anymore as times change and money gets shifted into more important things and theres less to play with , I guess motorsport is not cheap and alot of ppl that want an old car, want something they can cruise around in with there family without doing 4000rpm @ 100kms/h :) if I do another old car it will be along the lines of a stock xp falcon ( or hr holden) with a modified A/C system :)
I still log in once a week or so just for a bo peep, but have to admit I've moved on from the Escort scene, having sold the Mk2 1st and now the Mk1. I've gone down the bang for buck route, and headed over to the dark side of Japanese AWD Turbo. This site has to be the best, bar none for info and help for the Escort enthusiast in Australia. I just wish I could find something similar for Subarus!
Must say the site has been very helpfully over the years just reading through projects and technical issues in detail is something that facebook will never have. I'm only 30 always been around small Ford's and this site provides exactly what it details on the front page the preservation of escorts of the early 70's 80,s etc. What actually got me to this site was watching the escorts at leyburn and speed on tweed approx 8 years ago I remember stickers sold at the event rsmotorsport the advertising will help whether it is Facebook or a simple sticker a lot of people are still unaware of the valuable information and advice which is provided here, Nothing beats the sound of a screaming pinto , cosworth., bda, kent I hope to hear them for many years to come
Tough one And some good points made for sure. If I may I'll add a little insight from a newer member.
Mk1 2 door was my first car and Days after a full re spray a drop kick who couldn't drive a greased up thumb up his own arse hit it from behind and that was the end of that.
Never been into the big V8's or Jap cars like most of my generation, the "little red rocket" had a special place in my heart. Then a few years ago my amazing wife found and bought me an unlicensed red mk1 2 door for my 30th birthday!!!
Last 4 years I've been putting a lot of time an money into it and it's coming along great. Have since had a daughter so time, and the money have dried up a bit. But this forum has saved my bacon more times than I can remember. As I live 250km away from Perth, help in the physical sense (especially escort specific help) is not available. And although I completed my motor mechanic trade in my youth, I still get stuck regularly. Specifically what to change, what's the best replacement, how can I modify this or that etc etc. and that's where this forum is invaluable. The knowledge passed on from the older guys who grew up with these cars is worth bottling. Especially for people my age who don't have access to that knowledge base anywhere else.
I would love to add more to the page as far as insightful comments etc, but most of my comments would be about having a problem that most of you have seen a million times.
Saying that I'll get some more photos and get some progress pictures on the members cars page. Thanks to everyone who have (with out without knowing) helped me through a million issues, with a shite load more to come. The escort dream is alive and well with the younger generation trust me!
Mark
P.s. I'm also in the FB groups but 99 times out of 100 there are of no use!
In my view there are really only a few significant factors. One being that there is a generational change underway, which also coincides with a critical point in our cars lifespans (rapid decline in availability and subsequent horrendous spike in values) which leads to a significant downturn in the interest, availability and uptake of potential hobbyists, which leads to a down turn in forum activity. The same generational change also brings with it a different paradigm of social interactivity and awareness as it relates to methods of interaction and their actual awareness that this forum even exists. Combined with this, the forum is in my opinion a somewhat outdated media/social channel compared to modern offerings. For example, with headbook you can share, involve and interact with various media sources much easier than on a forum i.e. sharing pictures/videos etc is much more streamlined and therefore easier. Irrespective of weather you can still do it on the forum, the fact that it is easier means there will be more of it, which you can logically assume leads to greater interest and enjoyment from users. When you look at websites across various topics of interest these days, the really successful ones offer much more than just forum chat, they hold articles, interviews, event tracking etc.
Personally I find facespace annoying and proves itself accross all fronts these days as being not much more than a delivery method for those with a brain that won't function autonomously or efficiently. Not saying all users are as such, just seems to be a bit drowned out by a few with too much access to our reading space.
I think the biggest draw to the forums is watching other peoples projects as they come along and the subsequent discussions surrounding them. There are not many projects happening these days on this forum. I'll post more when more happens, just nothing happening on my front lately. It will soon change.
I would be very sorry to see the forum fade away, even though i'm a reasonably recent user in the scheme of things it's been a big part of my escort learning experience and i'm gratefull to those who have taken the time to help along the way. Perhaps as a relatively easy way of improving the forum in a passive sense without reinventing it would simply be some slight platform changes to streamline use i.e. for uploading media etc, it can be a bit of a slow painfull process sometimes having to resize and upload mutiple pics one at a time. Perhaps a slight facelift might help too, with the ability to better interact with other online sources weather they be mobile based or not. I don't know how easy or cheap all that is, it's just a thought. I also think mobiles are large and powerfull enough now that any mobile specific forum page is a pain in the arse with reduced content and interest, I always prefer to use the full website when given the chance.
Long time viewer, first time for posting - probably been watching and accessing info from this site for 7 or 8 years.
A very interesting discussion. Personally I have always found this website exceptionally informative. Some of the suggestions for vehicle modification and the build blogs have been both technically inspiring and uniquely adaptable to those of us who live in the antipodes.
It would be a great shame to lose the site, and I thoroughly enjoy the articles written by the guys who are prepared to document their builds / repairs / modifications in detail.
True, Turbosport has a very strong following worldwide (I have a build on there), but for me, the attraction of RSM is its local flavour. The depth of knowledge displayed by some of the guys who regularly contribute on here is astounding and easily matches anything the guys in the UK may have.
Facebook is instantly accessible, the only problem is there are millions of trainspotters out there, and they're not always right.
Haven't posted in a while, but visit most days. Race car hasn't been out since July last year and is a little sick... Time to upgrade the engine to something more modern, but that has to wait a bit longer.
Still very much into Escorts (not the two legged ones) and have an Mk1 2 door waiting in the wings to be built up as an Alan Mann replica for the street. So hopefully the forum sticks around for many years to come.
