Speed Restored • View topic - Australian RS2000 Values
Hi All, For all of those that want to give their opinions on the value of Australian RS2000's here's your opportunity, and I'll start the proceedings with some history. I first saw the new Australian built RS2000 at the Melbourne Motor Show in 1979 and wanted one straight away. I couldn't afford one on an apprentices wage so bought an Escort van instead. I bought my first one, a Pine Lime 4 door in '84 for $4700.00.
Since then I've owned a few of them, and many other Escorts, of various states of quality. About 10 years ago I was offered one of the 25 German built cars for $12,000.00. What would this be worth now?
The last RS2000 I sold was another white two door. It was in reasonable condition needing a re-trim and some minor body work but had a Cortina/non-matching numbers engine. I sold this a few years ago for $10,000.00. Since then the owner has had me install a near new interior and some other items. I would now value this car at $25000.00. I base this value on recent sales of Australian RS2000's of which there have been a few at the $25k mark. I am yet to see a truly unique example of a matching numbers car sell in recent times, but I would say that an excellent car would sell for about $30k.
I am aware of restorable 4 door cars selling for $12-14k and other 2 doors in the $15-16k mark. This is why I believe the car I have for sale is priced correctly at $15k.
As these cars have become more desirable and non-enthusiasts such as us are now buying them, the need for originality has also grown. Those that follow the rare car market will be aware that original features and in particular matching numbers is a key selling feature. This is why a matching numbers car is a lot more valuable now than in the past.
It is interesting to note that with the restored prices now heading above $25k that the model is now worth restoring with resto costs of between $10-15k.
I too would still love to live in the era when we could pick up a reasonable RS for $5k, but those days are in the past. Thankfully the market is now aware of what are truly great cars and is prepared to pay accordingly for them.
Which is why David's is a $5000 (tops) car. Good luck if you can sell it for more, but there's a bucketload of work to fix it up and once it's done, how much of the original car would you be left with anyway?
Aussie Mk2 RS2000's are extremely overrated to start with, absolutely nothing special about them.
The old adage, its only worth what someone is prepared to pay. The seller can ask any amount of money, but the car will sell for whats it's worth and only be worth what it sells for. In this instance I think the starting point is too high. I personally, with 30 years around the escort marque, don't value the RS2000 enough to warrant a minimum 30-40K spend unless it was a real collectable, I dont think they are that collectable here. Unfortunately we are in Australia where the escort plays second or third fiddle to the big fords, holdens, chryslers and sadly probably even VW's. Europe is another matter. I am sure there are pockets around the country where values may be better, but it might appear here, where you have advertised it, they are not.
Firstly Gen Mk1 RS200. One of the 25 imported by Ford Motor Company Australia in restored condition would have to be worth at least $40-50k here but more in the UK. If it's a private import then a little less. However this is a global car so would be worth more in the UK and Europe. A little underrated here as we had so many Mk2's with the Pinto in them and a lot more Twin Cam/GT1600's. As an example of Global cars an Aussie Twin Cam recently sold in the UK, where they had previously kyboshed our assembled cars for UKS39,000.00 which is about $80k. Secondly cam. Looks like a great cars. Advertiser mentions surface rust so will need a repaint, you can also see this from the under bonnet pics. Once your doing a body it doesn't cost a lot more to do panel repairs. Doesn't mention matching numbers and doesn't have original wheels. Needs trim. So this is about right. Maybe even a bit of a bargain. Would still need at least $10k to be spent on a sympathetic resto. Thirdly Oztangs 65. No new panels are needs for my car. If you read the description the left front needs some remedial work for a poor repair. It's all there. The rear panel is a repair job not necessarily a replacement, so I don't get your comment. Unlike most RS2000's I've seen, this one hasn't been chopped around. Finally JPayne. You are absolutely correct. It is worth what somebody is prepared to pay. Obviously those on this forum with strong opinions aren't prepared to pay the going rate won't, although I note that other than Danny nobody else has mentioned that they are interested in the car just that they are interested in offering their opinion! I've been in the automotive industry for more than 35 years and it is only recently that non-Holden/Ford GT GTS Monaro etc buyers are starting to come out of the woodwork. I think this is a reflection of the market being a little tired of the norm and the norm recovering in price. This is also evident in run of the mill Mustangs which are now a dime a dozen where as something a little different like a Cougar or Torino is now more valuable. It is also interesting to see how, again something different, like a Sandman or Sundowner has grown in value. I recently attended the 40th Australian Van Nationals with my recently restored Escort Sundowner and was blown away by the level of interest and support. You would be surprised in the number of guys and girls who came up to me because they always wanted a Sundowner. It seems that suddenly mainstream, non-enthusiasts, are willing to part with good readies for classic cars such as ours. I can understand if a reply on this forum wants to talk down the value of our cars if they are looking for a bargain, but please don't underestimate the value we are now seeing, and rightly so. Most of us have known for years how great these cars are to drive, how simple they are to repair and how cool they are. Let's ride the wave, get more people involved and increase the value of our investments.
I know of a one owner red 2 DR RS2000 that sold for $12000 recently. Certainly wasn't a concourse winner but was straight and no rust, registered and driveable. Asking was 15000 but the buyer drove a hard bargain and the owner was in a forced sale position. I just cant see $15000 when there are far better cars out there but I deffo could see it go overseas if advertised internationally.
Mk 2 Escort Sports Sedan 2L N/A YB Cosworth engine rebuild completed. 100% Mongrel FORD...actually Oz block & crank, Yankee pistons, English head & rods, Ozzie cams & valves!
As has been said any car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and each person's view on that will be different.
We all saw the red 2dr RS on the Gold Coast that went through eBay about 6 months ago and went for $18k, It was worse than David's and had us all scratching our heads with a WTF? I know the guy who sold it (Brad). He's just finished his own resto on a white 2rd RS (it's simply stunning) and thought he'd sell the other car to help pay for the resto costs. He was just as shocked as the rest of us and better still, the guy paid within 24 hrs and the car was gone in 48. And it got to $18k because there were two bidding. Obviously someone wanted that car and was prepared to pay for it.
About a month later there was another one on eBay in Victoria, similar car and I think from memory bids started at around $5k. Brad rang the guy and when asked how much he wanted, first thing the seller said was "Well that other one a month ago sold for $18k so I want at least $15k!" He didn't get it as it ended up around $8k and he did sell it at that.
What I'm saying is that there is a general price where things will sell, and then there is the price where someone wants that car. And that car price depends on just how bad they want it and how much that person thinks the resto will cost them to do. So David, when I look at your car I think a general price where those of us collect these things and are looking for "a restorer" is probably around $5k-$7500 depending on how good the body is. But a that car price is probably not unrealistic at $15k. The difference is the size of the purchaser pool you are trying to sell to - there will be lots in the general category but only 1 in the that car category. You're challenge is to find that 1.
We'll all be watching with interest because shifts in market price will only change with more sales. I also agree that it would make your price and possibly more if it was advertised in the UK. Its not the car for me but I wish you well and hope you do indeed get your price.
Thanks Nev, you've hit the nail on the head. It's a bit like the housing market, particularly in Melbourne and Sydney. I've just bought and sold. Sold the house above the market price yet was able to buy well below. Some people have the opposite experience. Who'd have known!
As for the seats, there was a pair of front seats on Gumtree for $1k. I've bought them in the past for $800.00. No the seats aren't the most valuable item. The sum of the parts now is less than the whole as the market seems to be paying more for a valuable car than they are for the value of the parts individually, and this is a good sign, not only for RS2000's but other rare models and indeed run of the mill models.
I don't get some people's obsession with rising values (especially with house prices, but that's for another time and probably another forum). My car isn't for sale, and hence I don't care what it's worth. I own it because of the pleasure it brings me, and it being potentially worth $X more than when I bought it has absolutely no bearing. In fact, a higher value only makes it more costly to insure and makes me worry more about theft and damage, which diminishes my pleasure. Higher prices also hinder me from doubling my pleasure by buying another! To each his own though.
Yeah I own the first & last escorts off the rank 1970 MK1 and 1980 MK2 and I wouldn't be interested in owning one if it weren't for the fact you can still find bargains out there.
Like Scott I don't find the MK2 RS2000 all that appealing. An RS1800 on the other hand
In saying that I believe a Monza Red MK2 RS2000 coupe in good condition ie: straight body, good original paint, worn but not tatty interior, minimal rust in unmolested condition would currently be worth around 16K
Hell if people want $4000 for 4 door 1300 that would have been cut up a few years ago then a RS2000 for $15000 may not be that far off the mark. i wouldn't pay that much for an RS2000 i don't like them but each to there own
