Car Trailer
Can the people with car trailers provide some informed opinions as to whether hydraulic over-run brakes are any good. Mine will not be a high use trailer but obviously when it is in use it needs to be safe.
Electric brakes are better....you dont need to rely on the cars brakes
yes if you are only towing light weight cars and not going too far Hydraulic brakes will suffice but once you have driven with electric you will not back
over 2000 kg new hydraulic brakes are electric over hydraulic
for the cost of decent brake controllers $170 which are simple to wire in you can adjust the brakes to get a perfect balance
most controllers now have emergency features to increase power to brakes when heavy braking is required
All my friends have now swapped their trailers over
I have found that towing over-run brakes is more dependent on the vehicle towing. If you have a big solid tow vehicle then you won't know the trailer is there, if it is a small lightweight vehicle doing the towing then it will oscillate and you will be constantly reminded that it is there and fighting it.
As a rough example, when towing various Escort race/show cars behind a 929 Mazda it was a constant fight with the trailer, put it on the back of a GU Patrol ute and other than being even slower leaving the lights you wouldn't know it was there.
Also same situation with a dual axle box trailer, behind a Subaru Outback and it was a pain in the butt, behind the GU wagon I currently have and you wouldn't know the trailer was there.
Anyway no science to any of that, just from experience and there are a lot of factors in play here.
I converted my car trailer to electric brakes as it became a plant trailer living behind a ute carrying equipment around primary to allow both axles to be braked increasing its carrying capacity. However if I was building a car trailer I would make it hydraulic override as then it's use isn't limited only to vehicles with a brake controller. Not an issue if you never intend to let others use/borrow the trailer and it is a dedicated race-car trailer but sometimes it is handy to be able to just use any vehicle with a towball to haul it around.

Cheers for that. I looked at a trailer last night that had over-run brakes but they were cable operated disks not hydraulic. Should be just as reliable providing the cable tension is adjusted correctly.
I'm sorry but I've towed a number of trailers with electric brakes over the years and none of them tow as well as my current trailer which has 4 Nissan Skyline 2 piston callipers with a 1" master cylinder!
good plan OZ. If your going to have it made get the best geometry you can. Get the bed low as possible. I like rubber block suspension over leafs, as I have mentioned before the bed is only about 350mm above the road. Makes a very stable trailer at silly speeds. I use 13 inch truck tyres to aid in bed height get long lightweight ramps! mine are too heavy but nobody has ever stolen them. I like steel as I have seen a few alloy trailers fatigue crack too easy through vibration. Not major structural parts but wheel racks and other such accessories. Use readily available parts and wheels. Nothing worse then hard to get or expensive parts or replacing a whole set of wheels because one is buckled and not made anymore. As long as the brakes are well maintained and sized accordingly they will be fine no matter which way you go. And they only work when the trailer wheels are touching the ground, not bouncing through gullies ey Danny!
Bought a second hand trailer as it came up at a good price. It has alot of surface rust across it so I plan to give it a paint. I am NOT interested in a full strip and paint but something more like a blowover. Are there products that will go straight over the surface rust or would that need to be either neutralised or removed? Again, not looking for the best but only something that will last 3-5 years.
Was thinking a sand/scotch disk on the worst area, some Killrust Rust-Eeter/POR15 Metal Prep then maybe Wattyl Killrust Epoxy Enamel...
After having tried all sorts of coatings including POR which the advertising gives you the impression you just paint it over rust... you can't. And doing all the rust conversion, metal ready etc is a @#$% load more effort too and if you only want it for a few more years, I would just get a big wire brush on an angle grinder and take it back to bare where it needs (which you'll probably have to do anyway) and then just give it a wipe and hit it straight with some epoxy enamel. It'll last almost as long as just about any other option short of hot dipping it, and be about a 3rd the effort and a fraction the price.
Trailers over 2000kg GVM need to have brakes on all axles. Is there any benefit of putting brakes on both axles for a sub-2000kg car trailer? I have read a few opinions that the second set of brakes can cause the trailer to jack-knife. Seems strange when it is a requirement on some. The brakes on my 4be are not great IMO so I want great trailer brakes as I need to decend the freeway into Adelaide.
It looks like the brakes on the trailer I bought may be quite worn so I need to replace. May keep the cable over-ride in which case I don't think I could use dual brakes but I may still go electric in which case I could.
Started sanding back a few bits today.......grrrrr
The winch on my trailer is a Jarrett F10204 that states it has only a 700kg line pull capacity. Much less than I would have thought safe for pulling an Escort up the ramps (the last owner drove his Evo unto the trailer). The webbing strap is knackered and needs replacing. I could either buy a replacement 50mm strap from just straps that is 1000kg rated or replace the whole winch. Not sure if the unit itself is what limits its rating or whether it is more the strap. Anybody in the know?
