Re-wire
Posted: Sun Apr 11, 2010 3:20 pmI completely rewired my F100 a couple of years ago. Not a trivial exercise by any means, but if you have a lot of patience and planning then you should be able to do it.
Have a look around It used to be a good site where you could download pdfs of each section but it looks like you have to fish around onsite to get to all the bits now.
Tools you will really, really want:
- Wire stripper (spring loaded type, the ones that are incorporated with crimping tools are generally pretty average)
- Crimper for bare connectors
- Crimper (ratchet style) for insulated connectors
- Crimper for big/battery cables (that one's a bit of a luxury and quite expensive)
- Cable cutter, especially for the thicker cables
- Heat gun for heatshrink tubing
Possibly a soldering iron, but most will shy away from any soldered joints in a car as they can break with prolonged exposure to vibration.
Wipers can be tricky beasts to get sorted, keep as much of the original wiring as possible and replicate/replace with new wires.
I used a lot of trailer wire (7 core) for indicator/brake lights and such. It's much easier to run them than individual wires.
I drew mine up in AutoCAD so I can supply info that way if you can use it.
