Replacing rear wheel bearings?

Hi All,
Have dropped the rear end out of the car to replace shocks, brake overhaul, re-paint, oil change, so thought i would do bearings as well. Unfortunately the slide hammer i have is not heavy enough to knock the half shafts out.
So i was wondering, do the bearings need to be pressed on/off the shafts? if they do i may as well save the money buying a new hammer and just take it to someone, any advise appreciated.
CheeRS,
Michael

Oh, and also, does anyone know if the rubber boots that cover the handbrake levers on the brake backings are still available?
Cheers,
Michael

Enough hammer agro can smash the old bearing off, wrap in a rag to prevent shrapnel wounds.
New bearings can be slowly coerced into place with a pin punch & hammer or right size pipe and hammer.
A press is so much easier.

Cold chisel to remove the retaining collar and a press to remove the bearing and refit everything.

Thanks Gents,
I'll save my money on the hammer, sounds like a job for someone with the right tools. Cheers Scott for the link, ended up finding them here in Oz as well.

You could try a heat gun on the housing then the slide hammer again. Very useful for working with bearings and shafts I've found.

Reverse the drum brakes and put them back over the half shafts with the wheel nuts done up a couple of turns and just heave on it.
This works very well as an impromptu slide hammer and have a bit of weight behind it too.
Just take your shafts to get them pressed properly it won't cost much and will be done properly.

DO NOT USE HEAT TO REMOVE THE BEARING AS IT QUITE OFTEN CRACKS THE HALFSHAFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the heat reference was in relation to removing the axle/bearing from the housing.

Gee Thanks!
Anyway, while i have your attention, these came with the bearing kit but don't seem to fit anywhere? The bearings are sealed anyway, do i just chuck these??
Again, thanks to all for the advise, as when i went back to the mechanic he was cursing and swearing at me, F@#ckn things... i told him if he didn't do me a good deal i would recommend him for wheel bearings on the internet... i think i got a bargain!
