Alloy diff housing flex?
I met with two historic racers at Phillip Island Classic who both reported issues with the alloy diff carriers flexing in their Mk1 Escorts. Clubbie guys have not reported this happening. Has there been any issues with a lack of rigidity in alloy diff carriers over time?
I was warned away from them. If your car is over, say 800kg, with 200HP or more you will have problems. When you say "clubbie" do you mean Caterham style cars?
Talk to Steve at SMCKA.com
Mk 2 Escort Sports Sedan 2L N/A YB Cosworth engine rebuild completed. 100% Mongrel FORD...actually Oz block & crank, Yankee pistons, English head & rods, Ozzie cams & valves!
i might be way off here but I would say the average Caterham would be around the 550-650 KG. The point of the alloy diff is to further reduce the total mass of the car. As you increase the power and torque up to more than double the original spec you obviously increase the strain on the differential gears, soft compound tyres increase the level of grip etc etc. When you feed the power on, rotational forces actually try to force the components apart in the gearcase and the diff causing twisting or flexing. I dont know for sure what their limits are but in a nice lightweight clubbie they're fine. Put them in a heavier MK1 or 2 car might be exceeding them.

there is newer castings available now that adress that problem with the older castings still wouldnt put any more than 200 hp thru them next problem is pinion failure most likely
ahh...well I'm hardly going to 'out' someone on a public forum. But rest assured they were not using alloy carriers on the day and they said that they had given up on using them - perhaps they meant in other escorts? Like many Escort enthusiasts they seemed to have more than one! I'm curious as to the stiffness as there does not look to be enough room to have enough cast alloy to equate to the same stiffness as the cast iron(?) carrier. Given the issue of gear spread and tyre grip, the issue would be one of torque yes? Was this addressed by using the Atlas axle or was that more of a driveshaft fix?
Appreciate that. Yes Gary it's illegal. Not that I think any cars there were cheating the times certainly didn't reflect that.
Not sure what they/you are worried about. The English axle diff carrier is light compared with almost every car you compete against. The saving said to be approx 5 kg is not cost effective weight saving v reliability. The weight is also well positioned although unsprung.
Then to be effective you would need a number of them to house spare ratios/diff types (LSD/spool/limited locking).
Atlas heavier than English so would be adding weight to save weight.
My advice would be to look elsewhere for weight saving. What type of car do you have?
didnt the works teams use these items in the day ?? ie works lotus cortinas & some escorts ?? isnt that where the originated from ? were they acused of cheating ?? were they actualy a ford motorsport competition item ? just like ordering an lsd as an option ??? this argument says they are a legal period component
The works cars used all sorts of parts that aren't legal in NC. The CofD cars are allowed to run parts they used on the specific date they choose to run to.
Not saying they shouldn't be legal Steve just that it is not supported by the rules. Also I didn't accuse anyone of cheating!
not talking about cheating more like how wrong & inconsistent are the rules ?? you say a c of d car can run all the goodys but a built up car cant ? all in the same category ??
I was tempted by one since I need to rebuild the diff in my car anyway when I put an LSD in it sometime this year, but I have many other, more important things to do. As far as cost effective - it depends on what you have already changed on a car. It gets to a point where dropping 5kg for $X is cost effective as everything else would cost you more - though I am no where near this point. Anyway the clubbie guys will be interested in the information.
Yep all in the same category Steve. There aren't many CofD cars that run of any type including Escorts. The thing with NC is its not about racing more of recreating what existed pre 1972 although that is sometimes forgotten. Also now unless you like RX2's you're not going to be competitive in under 3L. I don't blame the RX2 guys you'd be made not to build one if you didn't have an allegiance to a particular make/model or if you liked rotaries.
Neil I appreciate your point but still think there would be better ways to use your money to make the car faster than spending the money there but yep might be more relevant for clubman type racers.
no probs crusey a good escort pilot can outdrive most mazda rotorheads anyway the mentality needed to drive a chicken cooker is a bit like being one of the patients at the hospital where danny works
There is one coming and no bridge port Ha ha just 1595 cc Escort an old car a very old car bring it as for busting alloy diff housings that will happen weight is the enemy in the period not to many races where won by Mazdas so what has changed ?
why are the rotaries faster now than in the past - development over many years. They have their challenges, but you should not discount the driver ability of people like Jason Humble. Mind you after watching some in-car video footage of some classes I'm starting to agree with the proposition that a driver in a race at PI/Sandown historics should have at least 3 events in his log book in the previous 12 months.
Whilst I'm not discounting Jason's ability the racing isn't fair. The true capacity of a 12a is far closer to three liters than two. And the escorts are at 1660 (BDA) and 1600 (TC). The rotaries have been allowed to BP and according to rotary guys the rotaries can develop as much power in BP form as PP. Some RX2 rwhp figures would be greater than escorts bhp figures. To add insult to injury they are now allowed to run watts link to fix the rear end challenges they had.
Their in a different capacity class but are completely ruining the racing in under three litre in my opinion. The faster they make the class split over and under two litre and make the rotaries compete against cars with similar power/weight the better.
It's an insult to escort drivers, and for that matter alfa, bmw and datsun drivers that the two are even compared.
I think 'an insult to the drivers' is going a bit far and has the racing ever been 'fair'? Don't worry I understand your point, but the changes need to come from within to alter any bias to one particular car.
While Jason impressively leads the charge I'm sure the above facts have far more to do with RX2 speed than anything else.
The other point is that to get a competitive RX2 is a lot cheaper than any other small car. The really fast RX2's are spending $$ but a cheaply built rotar could be as competive as a big $ BDA.
Can't see it changing anytime soon so feel that the punters on the fence should be educated as to why two cars roughly the same size are not playing on an even playing field.
