What is the best method of aligning a rear diff

Guys, does anyone have any recommendations on the best way/method of aligning a rear diff in a Mk1 Escort.? I want to make sure the axle is sitting square to the car.

The car does not have any rear leaf springs so I can't use them for a measuring point. I did a rough calculation using the centre of the front spring hangar bolts on each side to the front edge of the diff but I'm not sure if that is accurate enough.

Any help would be cool.!

Sorry I have yet to tackle this but I would have thought the method you suggested would work. Probably what I would have done. Other than that you might have to use the front struts/strut tops as the measuring point after all this is what you are trying to get the diff square to..... :?:

I bought one of those little laser keyrings, much easier than a plumb line so I'll see how I go.
