Weber 45DCOE 9, 45DCOE 152G info request
I personally don't care as it's more a case of make sure that both carbs are identical and then tune them to suit the application I have used 152's and quite like them and are quite flexible, as far as where they're made I don't think there's is anything in it
Hey, Something I thought I might add after my recent experiences getting to know weber carbs. Many people say the older ones are better than the newer ones, When I ask why they all don't give a specific reason just that they are made to a finer tolerance. I certainly do not have enough experience with them to comment if the Italian ones are truly better made, the only anecdote I can give is that a couple of replacement parts I got while reconditioning my set recently I felt were less than perfect and needed very slight modifying. Nothing major just a little wet and dry here or there.
One thing I can say for sure is this. The reliability and performance of webers is very dependant on their overall condition. Specifically things like minor wear in the throats around the throttle plates, spindle bushes etc just to name a few. The thing is that these things really have to be perfect not just to ensure the carb operates properly but to mean both carbs are likely to be in sync (throughout the whole range), which is just as critically important. ie a little more wear on a bore of one means a bees dick more throttle opening to sync them and get a good idle but can ruin off idle transition due to plates not being perfectly in sync or operating the same in relation to the progression holes etc etc. I certainly got the impression that they are a fantastic carburettor, but like any precise instrument (which they are!!) has to be in perfect condition, something most carbs just aren't. They are just something people strap on the their engines and get frustrated when they don't work as expected.
The point is, an old carb is an old carb. Even if it was once a better product, unless you take the WHOLE thing completely apart and inspect knowing exactly what to look for and how they work, it may never perform as well as a new one even if you spend almost as much as a new one just trying to get to work as well. And if you buy a pair that haven't lived their life together well its even more likely they wont work as well no matter what you do.
Just something to consider, sometimes new and "supposedly" inferior is still better than old and never quite right.
My 2 cents: the old Italian Webers were better castings because of better moulds. Just compare an aux. venturi from an Italian carb to a newer Spanish item. As a result of this, the "Bologna" carbs 'suck' better w.r.t. the newer carbs. In the old days you fitted a F16 tube and a 50F9 idle jet to a set of 40's (for a mildly tuned engine) or an F9 tube and a 55F8 idle jet to a set of 45's with 39 mm venturis for a rally-engine and you were nearly there.
Because the newer carbs do not suck that well an F16 tube no longer works that well neither does a F9 tube for a big bhp engine. This is also the reason most of the newer carbs need a xxF6 idle jet; with a xxF9 idle jet the progression phase is too lean or if you fit a bigger idle jet (say 60F9 instead of 55F9) to compensate the engine runs rich in most of the idle to 3000 rpm range.
Oh and not every Spanish made Weber is the same; there was a period that most of these carbs were scrap as they left the factory. Weber then stopped production for a while and the 2nd hand DCOE's especially became expensive. The 45DCOE 152 has 3 progression holes, the 152G has four and the special "Zetec" ones have 5 because some say that a Zetec does not run well on 4 progression hole Webers ... still cannot find out why that is exactly ...
