Investigating which fuel tank to purchase for my car. Originally I was thinking the usual shaped alloy tank and stand that the UK boys use. Problem is these run over $600+ delivered to Australia. I am also concerned that alloy would split if it took a hit (over the axle is a pretty strong area though but you can never be too careful!).
The other option is a poly tank from Autosport (cannot recall brand but it is similar to the Jazz black poly ones).
The poly tank then gives the issue that it would probably not allow the spare wheel (15") to sit on the boot floor. I will have to investigate if the regs allow the rear bulkhead to be shaped to allow the square Jazz tank to sit forwards more. I would also have to make up my own stand.
I have no idea really what capacity I need but I would think around 60 litres would do. Surely a full noise Pinto would not use more than that on a mornings worth of stages??????? Is there any downside to running a larger tank but aprtially empty (assume foam filled)?
If I get the poly tank the outlets are on the top. Would the usual Facet Red-Top pump be capable of lifting the fuel from the tank or does it need to be gravity fed?? I would also need to see if I could get an angled filler neck made up as the Jazz off-the-self one is stoopid money!
Any comments or advice would be gratefully appreciated.
I wouldn't worry about it being alloy and therefore weak. If there was any safety issue they wouldn't be in every single escort in the UK. $600+ isn't too bad for something that will fit and serve its purpose without stuffing around IMO.
A JAZ Pro Street could be what you want. They are sumped and have 2 bottom outlets, filler and top return with 12 and 16 gallons. About $330 from VPW. If you haven't bought a pick up pump consider a Carter 'Black' P4600HP 100 gallons hour @ 8 psi. Rotary vane, great lift if you need it, quiet and reliable and cheap for the performance.
I had mine made up about ten years ago. It's just a 50L rectangular box mounted over the rear axle with a breather and return on the top, and a small "sump" on the bottom with two outlets. Simple hose for "site gauge" and is attached using threaded rods.
I've only ever run out of fuel once, it was at the 2GO and it was my fault (according to my crew, anyway).
Roger, I did look at Carter pumps at Autosport. Whats makes them better???? Same price as Facet.
Facet.....Cant think of a worse pump
What brand regulator is that you show???
Holley
I was going with the 'usual' Filter King regulator/filter. Any reason for one over the other?
Better control and adjustability
Where would you suggest the tank goes?? On the boot floor? My thinking is that it wont make a material difference but that's an uneducated guess!!! Pinto up front probably means a tank way down the back is a good idea![/quote]
................with a few differences now.
I can run this, above system, down real low [fuel level] and still be able to corner.
Looks a nice setup Roger!!! Do you run twin fuel lines up to the carbies or do you T-off the two pumps somewhere?
Dont think my regs permit underfloor tank (maybe on a Mk2 as fitted as standard but not Mk1). I also need to fit a spare in there.
Will look at holley regulators and alternate filters.
Still doesnt explain WHY Facet are no good. I will be running twin pumps and the Facet fit in neater although I guess that is no real reason to get those over Carter.
