just out of interest a mate of mine is givign me one of his old pintos, i dont need one tah the moment as the engine in my rally car is strong as but, this will be a spare..but one thing that interested me was he's giving it to me with "twin 48mm down draft webers", i can only assume these will be IDF webers?, i dont have much experience or knowledge on IDF's, im more clued up ion the sidedraft 45's veriety.

couple of questions:

1) are they anygood?
2) ill probably not keep them, are they worth anything? with manifolod etc?

Hi Matt,

My experiance with IDF's is that due to the design of the fuel bowl and the top cover, the idle jets block up quite easily. There are kits available from California that the Bug/Baja guys use to stop them blocking up. I have seen a Formula Vee hillclimb car with the vent slots blocked up and small pipes with foam on the end soldered in to the top cover to seal the fuel bowl. It can be quite annoying cleaning them all the time but then again a lot of Fiats or Alfas? had them fitted to the flat 4 engines so that must count for something.

One would think there may be slightly less MAX power available due to the manifold design but I have never seen back to back tests so you could be safe in saying they are probably as good as DCOEs. Some Weber experts say that they are better suited to the road as the diaphragm style accelerator pump (like DGAV) is smoother but I never noticed a difference to the DCOE piston style pump.

Even so, opening a bonnet and seeing twin IDFs is a nice suprise and a bit different from the common DCOEs. If it is genuine FORD manifold it should be worth a bit as the original boys like them for their RS2000's. The carbs should be worth at least as much as the equivelant DCOEs in my opinion.
