75 Mk1 Hubs rotors calipers struts???????
I have 75 Mk1 Coupe which appears to have all standard front suspension and brakes. I have bought a set of vented capri rotors and commodore calipers to do the brake conversion, but my hubs seem to have brake bolt pattern that is too small. Do I need to get Mk2 hubs? Mk2 Struts? or capri both. would mk2 hubs fit my Mk1 struts?
Also looking to do a coilover conversion. Can I use my Mk1 struts? or do i need mk2 for that as well?
i have commodore calipers on my car and the holes have been elongated to fit on to the 2lt struts/ hub. As for coilover i would go for the mk2 2lt stuts as a minimum
There's a multitude of alternatives available, personally I don't see the need for Commodore calipers either way.
1. Capri struts, capri hubs and capri brakes, complete bolt-in and hooks up to your existing brake lines. Spring seats put the car lower at the front (25mm I think). Getting rarer to find.
2. Mk 2 struts, hubs and brakes (50mm OD strut tubes). Problem being the mk2 gear is metric so you need to put a mk2 rack in and get some brake lines that are imperial at the body end and metric at the brake end.
You can put Mk2 calipers on the capri struts, but as the Capri caliper uses 7/16 bolts and the Mk2 uses 12mm caliper bolts you need to get some very thin wall sleeves made to fill the gap between the 7/16 bolt and the 12mm holes in the calipers. I believe that there is a special bolt available if you can track one down.
Spacer Kit for the Escort/Capri calipers to take the Capri vented disks.
Thanks heaps for the advice. My big problem is that I don't have access to much mk2 stuff. I have got onto some mk2 struts today, but no brakes. So the plan is now for the mk2 struts to go coil over, and Dba101 rotors with the commodore calipers. How does this sound?
Ive never fitted commodore callipers, but i would imagine they would need custom brackets to marry up to the escort strut? Either way "elongating" the holes i think is a big no no if your looking to have it registered, they won't pass it like that.
Also, i don't think they would much up to your cars standard master cylinder size. The larger calliper size will require more fluid to work them i.e. you'll get excessive pedal travel for not much bite if your using the standard escort master. So your master cylinder size will need looking at.
What is the car going to be used for? Road registered? Track/Rally? What engine, other mods are you looking to do? i.e. how fast will the car be?
If its road, then mk2 2ltr callipers are usually ok with a set of decent pads. Ensuring the whole system is working well they can be quiet adequete. This would be my pick. Or what Ozstang65 has mentioned above.. I had a 170hp pinto powered registered mk1 which was pretty quick, which had this setup with just good quality pads, and the brakes worked fine. Any faster though it would need an upgrade.
Going from that for bigger power fast road/race etc.. there are many options, but most of them involve changing master cylinders as a minimum, or further more a full peddle box setup. Keep in mind any modification that wasn't standard affair means engineering everything and much more expense.

If you go Mk2 struts/hubs you will end up with different wheel nut threads front and back also. If it's going to be registered forget coil-overs and commodore calipers as they will not pass without engineering. Ford options are bolt-on and as far as I am aware all legal providing you update the whole system (master cyl and rear brakes also).
If it's for the track then you can possibly do whatever you want as long as it fits into the class rules you want to compete in.
Thanks for the advice. Not concerned about legality, but really confused now. I already have mk2 diff in the car and it matches the front. What to do? I can't find any mk2 calipers!
Well there's a lot of people around here with upgraded brakes so there should be a few standard calipers floating about. I've got a few pulled apart here, I'd have to check them out to see if they can be fixed.
All you need is drums and backing plates and all the little springs/hinges etc I can probably get pics for the handbrake mod as that is what i have on my mk1
Rear Brake Cylinders P10035 (Metric - will need Mk2 brake lines) Rear Brake Shoes 9" x 1 3/4"
if you want the back brakes to work use v6 capri 9"/twin cam wide drums the best i have seen used had a mixture of both soft & hard compund friction material on the linings ie soft on leading & hard comp on the trailing shoes wheel cyl size is important too
Tricked again. After sourcing a fresh matching set of mk2 drum assemblies, turns out the car already has them factory fitted.
Decided I was getting way carried away, so it's either, stock mk2 all round, with slotted rotors and top shelf pads. Or Capri vented rotors with spaced calipers.
Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
Given the car is purely for the street and has a very mild 1600.
