Hi,

Whats everyones/anyones opinion on making brake pipes out of copper??.

Believe its called Kunifer?

Thank you.

Copper is too flexible, bit like rubber. Also work hardens and cracks.

So no good. Doesn't rust though.

John,

This Kunifer stuff has nickel added, sos it doesnt work harden and is tougher.

Ashley,

Brake line is half the problem.

The other is the flareer it self.

Had little luck with above. keep going off center.

I have just tried this one above and it gives reasonable results.

The good ones are over $200 bucks and I find this hard to justify for once in a blue moon brake flaring.

These are very helpfull for bending tube. Can do very tight bends!

Some info to read.

yeah, sounds like i'm having similar problem to you.
using a tool like the first one.
sometimes it goes off centre, but most of the time the pipe gets pushed through the clamp bit instead.

See this one grabs the pipe, instead of spreading formers

I know it will be more expensive, but has anyone used 3/16 Stainless Steel tubing for brake lines?

I have used SS stuff for scientific vacuum applications years agao and the stuff feels quite "bendable".

Surely will look heaps better than copper coated steel or crap green coated steel pipe.

I'm fairly sure a mate who is building a hot rod said that lots of those guys use 3/16 diam SS pipe.

Mark,

How the hell are ya!

Funny u should reply.

I got some steel, copper plated line pipe when i did brakes for trailer.

It rusts..... so yeah not much good either.

I doubt if Road register Authorities would like Kunifer pipe being used, could be wrong though.

Anyhow I used flarer, one pictured first, not that actual one. with brand new replacement mandrel, The main thing is the flares go off center.
But yeah they are ok.
Did a couple each end of pipe.

Stainless pipe would be tough on flarer, George. I would suggest the vice mounted unit.

Mark, Have u got one of these Modpro units ?

Sorry to all UK guys, but I can't make myself use the copper stuff for the one and only reason that it looks like CRAP. In my mind that stuff is used on old airconditioners and illegal moonshine stills. It just looks wrong.

I'm thinking about getting a bloke who does the SS brake lines to do it, so I'm not sure of the flare tool.

Two other options I have since thought about are using the steel pipe and getting it zinc plated. Anyone see any props with this.

Last option is to get old coated stuff from the wreckers and re-use.
