Some people here bag the duratec, but having run them in race cars in the UK, the are some real advantages, the weight being the most obvious, they are available cheaply, and it is not expensive to get them up to 240 bhp, so they are a good choice for an atom motor.
As for YB's with the exception of Danny's car, taking the turbo off is throwing the best bit away, mine cost peanuts, and makes 380bhp every time I drive it, it can also sit at highway speeds comfortably for 100's of Kms day in and day out, it idles in traffic embarrasses super cars, scares sports bikes, and puts a huge grin on my face whether on a race track or a Sunday blast, if you want cheap reliable big power outputs from a YB keep the turbo.
The Honda engine is starting to be a popular choice, they rev well and give good power out of the box, but have bugger all torque, I did drive one with a supercharge once though that was better
Zetec, never really liked them much, it is OK in the UK where you can pick one up for £20 and do a cheap conversion on a runaround car, but not much use as a serious motor (Focus ST170 was better, but again more as a cheap drop in motor with good results for the money and effort)
The Vauxhall XE is good, but a bit rare for the ones with the good head, and we replaced them with Duratec's in the silhouette cars 7 years ago, so unless you get a lucky find probably not worth considering.
And with Nissan SR20 motors, I would definitely consider a turbo one in an Escort, not sure I would bother with non turbo as it seems lot of effort when there are other options, don't know much about the other jap stuff so can't comment.
Honda- Too expensive to start with and have yet to see one get within 10% of their quoted poke on an engine dyno (except on a GoPower!)
Danny[/quote]
If your around engine dynos so much looking all these engines and able to comment on them why hasn't your engine been on one of these dynos?
By the way John Sidney wants to know what wrong with Go-Power dynos also and I'd like to know why you didn't tell Lincoln his numbers were high?
As far as best bang for buck with a Ford badge on it the Duratec wins.
Cosworth are clearing out some of their YDX Duratecs at the moment for $11000. For that you get steel crank and rods, forged pistons, Ti valves, dry sump and roller throttle bodies and 300hp.
the choice I've made for my own car is a modified pinto as this means it bolts straight in, needs no harness, engine bay or wiring mods and uses the original running gear. Duratec, Zetec, Rotary, Nissan and Honda engine swaps all need lots of other work aside from just acquiring the engine so the time and effort of the engine swap needs to be considered as well.
But seeing as the title is only "which engine" and makes no mention of end use or ease of installation, why not get an LS1 Chev V8. They're cheap, come with a massive amount of cheap aftermarket bits and will give much more grunt that anything with only 4 cylinders.
Paul, put in a YB, once you have one you will not look back and they way your car is turning out the YB will suit it
I vote for the YB, just put a basic engine together to start with and build on it when your budget suits, you can get them going quite well with a standard head and some nice cams and good pistons
I can help with a cheap set of pistons and valve springs if needed to get you started
