Hi All,

I have a TC Head on a 711M block that needs the water pump overhauled. Have been on the Burtons site and found all of the bits and pieces as well as gaskets etc, so now just need some advise on a plan of attack and the procedure for pressing the old pump out / new one in... does the head really have to come off? Cant i drop the sump and go that way?? Anyone in Brisbane a Guru? All advise much appreciated...

CheeRS, Michael.

As with most things getting the timing chest off won't be that difficult, however if you want to put it back on with out a heap of agro and oil leaks you need to take the head and sump off.

Disassembly of the pump is not difficult, you must support the cover around the pump boss when pressing apart or you will crack the cover.

The place that causes the most issues is were the seal sits. If it badly pitted it will need to be welded and re-machined or sleeved and the alternate smaller seal fitted.

It is not uncommon for badly pitted seal bosses to become porous.

I have pump/cover pressure testing fixture so that a reconditioned cover is tested at 80 C up to 50 psi.

It's not the sort of job to do twice.

Thanks Danny that would be great... thanks Paul for the tips, your right doing it once will be enough... the lucky thing is i do have a spare cover if it all goes wrong.

Hey Danny, I thought you told me years ago that you just honed a bigger hole in the water pump cover of your white TwinCam and fitted a 2l water pump shaft. Cheaper and more reliable option was your reasoning, and if so then some guy on eBay Aus has these for sale at a resonable price.

Darren no it got machined out and we used a later model pushrod shaft, bearing and seal

Hi John,
Looks the same size and would say it must be as the replacement water pump kit fits both the original and module cover.

I'm not familiar with the size of the TC pump, looking at using on a different engine, so I'm after a couple measurements.

With a ruler (no verniers handy at the moment) the diameter on the impeller is 54mm (depth 17mm), shaft is 11mm, bearings 22mm, seal 33mm, adapter ring 66mm.. may give you some idea.
